The nakshatra or constellation are the most important components in astrology. Each Zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatra or constellation having 13.20 degrees each. Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 sections called Padas which are of 3 degree and 20 minutes known as Navamsa. Each Zodiac covers 9 padas in total, thus nakshatra are very useful in determining the starting of a dasha or planetary period or cycles that divide the time in major periods and sub periods and to choosing a muhuratha or auspicious time .

The Moon spends approximately one day each in one constellation and thus lunar month is of approximately of 27 days equal to the numbers of Nakshatras. Nakshatra also define the characteristics of planet which are placed in them.

Janma Nakshatra is very important as per vedic astrology, it is that nakshatra which prescribed where the moon is placed at the time of birth.
